One of the more in depth and confusing classifications of racing because we have our versions of it here in the US with Indycar and Indy Lights along with some small feeder groups. Around the workd however is where you see the fan base really spring up to be behind their favorite drivers as the series travels all over the worls The most well know by far is Formula 1, and followed close by the relativly new formed A1GP which is true open wheen racing at its finest and it pits country against country in very equal cars. Other series that fall into this category are GP2, the F1 feeder series, F3, Renault World Series, and many others. There is a lot out there to watch and if the excitment on the track is not enough for you then the drama off the track with recent rules changes in the 09 season will keep you interested.
